Beach clean-up and coastal native

27th August 2023

Today I went for a beach clean-up at Pasir Ris Park with Sam. The beach clean-up is partnered with George's bar, so we go there monthly and help them to clean up the area directly outside of the bar. There are also some regular volunteers that come to help out for the beach clean-up. Unfortunately, due to some miscommunications that day, the volunteers did not turn up so it was just Sam and I.

The condition of the beach that day was not really dirty as the beach cleaners have already cleaned up before we came and it was high tide. Nevertheless, we still manage to accrue 4kg of trash. Afterwards, Sam invited me to an exhibition at Artscience museum where they also held some talks about marine conservation and environmental activism.

The event was organized by Coastal Natives, and they were having an art show outside the theater as well. I managed to talk to some of the volunteers and discuss the possibility about working with them for the next art exhibition somewhere next year. I also attended a series of educational talks including one by the famous BIOMJgirl who is a popular tiktok content creator who shares videos about the environment in bite-size and fun ways. She had just attended and expedition to Antartica and showed us about how global warming is greatly affecting the penguin populations and how the warming of Antartica also cause grass and flowers to bloomed (as opposed to the snowy white barrens).

The series of events today really helped me to provide a platform to network and meet like-minded people. I enjoyed sharing some of the ideas I had and hearing from their sharing of their own contribution as well. It definitely gave me a lot of insight and ideas to how individuals and communities have helped out in their ways to combat the environmental crisis.
