Initially, I had some trouble considering which company I should intern for as there are so many choices and I feel that my interests are varied. But one day I met with one of my close friends, Kheyton - who was also an alumnus of Lasalle. He told me to find an issue in the world that I resonate with and initiate a project to contribute to that area. I found his advice astoundingly insightful and I thought hard about his question over the following week.
At that point in time, I had been very interested in diving and had been diving for over 7 months. While I was diving, I was shocked to see so much dead corals and rubbish even in the ocean. I felt strongly that I wanted to do something about it but I was not sure what to do yet. I immediately thought back to my friend's words and decided to look up online to see if there were any diving-related internships. To my surprise, I managed to find quite a few options online, such as ReefX and some companies in Thailand. However, the downside was that many of these companies required some form of payment which was quite substantial. I decided to consult with one of my lecturers, Ruo Bing. Thankfully she was able to refer me to a marine conservation company that also does dive clean-ups as part of their activities. She referred me to Our Singapore Reef (OSR) and I managed to land an interview shortly after reaching out to the organizer, Sam Shu Qin.
Fortunately, I was able to move things fast and managed to secure a position as an intern with OSR and start within days of the interview. We discussed some ideas of what I could do to contribute to the organization as an intern, including using my skills as an artist to create educational and public outreach workshops. The key purpose is to educate and empower the public to play a part in saving the environment.
In my next few posts, I will share my experiences in OSR and personal reflections after the events.
